Aleksandr Ivanovich Kuprin was a prominent Russian writer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in 1870, Kuprin became a vital figure in Russian literature, celebrated for his vivid storytelling and keen observation of human nature. His literary career produced a rich body of work, including novels, novellas, and short stories that captured the complexities of his era before his death in 1938.

Kuprin is perhaps best known for his major novels, The Duel, published in 1905, and Yama: The Pit, which appeared in 1915. Throughout his career, he also published highly regarded shorter fiction and novellas. His early works, such as Moloch (1896) and Olesya (1898), helped establish his reputation, while later pieces like "Captain Ribnikov" (1906) and "Emerald" (1907) showcased his narrative versatility. His 1911 story The Garnet Bracelet remains one of his most celebrated works of shorter fiction and was adapted into a motion picture in 1965.
