Paul Proust de la Gironière was a French traveler and agriculturalist who spent a significant portion of his life in the Spanish Philippines. Arriving in the archipelago in 1820, he established the Jala Jala hacienda in Morong, located in the present-day Rizal province. On his estate, he engaged in various agricultural pursuits, including hog raising and the cultivation of indigo, sugarcane, and coffee. Gironière's agricultural innovations and dedication to horticulture earned him formal recognition in June 1837, when the Real Sociedad Economica de Amigos del Pais de Pilipinas awarded him a prize of 1,000 pesos for successfully raising 6,000 coffee plants. Beyond his farming endeavors, he managed his estate by fostering positive relationships with the local community, constructing a church for the clergy and building cockpits for his workers. He later documented his experiences and observations of Philippine life in his travel writings.
