Major-General Herman James Shelley Landon was a British Army officer whose military career spanned the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in 1859, Landon served in key conflicts of the British Empire, establishing himself as a dedicated commander during periods of significant global transition.\n\nLandon first saw major command during the Second Boer War, where he led a battalion. In the subsequent interwar period, he received promotions that positioned him for high-level leadership at the outbreak of the First World War. Upon the commencement of hostilities in 1914, he was appointed to command a brigade within the British Expeditionary Force, leading his troops during the initial engagements on the Western Front.\n\nHis leadership was further tested during the First Battle of Ypres, where he assumed command of the 1st Infantry Division following the death of his commanding general. Over the course of the war, Landon's responsibilities expanded as he went on to command four additional New Army divisions, marking a distinguished record of service. He lived until 1948, leaving behind a legacy defined by his extensive wartime leadership.
