John Edmund Mulaney is an American stand-up comedian, writer, actor, and producer. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Mulaney first gained widespread recognition as a writer for the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live from 2008 to 2013. During his tenure, he contributed to numerous memorable sketches and co-created the popular recurring character Stefon alongside cast member Bill Hader. Following his departure as a staff writer, Mulaney returned to host the show multiple times, officially joining the "Five Timers Club" in 2022.
Beyond his television writing, Mulaney has established a highly successful career as a stand-up comedian. He has released several widely praised comedy specials, including The Top Part (2009), New in Town (2012), The Comeback Kid (2015), Kid Gorgeous (2018), and Baby J (2023). His sharp, observational writing has earned him multiple Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. He also expanded his comedic repertoire with the 2019 Netflix children's musical comedy special, John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch.
Mulaney's work extends across television, theater, and voice acting. He co-created and starred in the Broadway show Oh, Hello on Broadway alongside Nick Kroll, reprising their comedic personas as George St. Geegland and Gil Faizon. He has also served as a writer and executive producer for the mockumentary series Documentary Now! and hosted the Netflix talk show Everybody's in LA. As an actor, he has appeared in series such as The Bear and Dickinson, and voiced prominent characters in animated films like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
