Jonathan Frederick Lawton, born in 1960, is an American screenwriter, director, and producer who has worked across a diverse range of cinematic genres. He is widely recognized for crafting the screenplay for the 1990 blockbuster romantic comedy Pretty Woman, which became one of the most successful films of its era. Lawton also established a strong presence in the action genre, writing the hit film Under Siege and its sequel Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, as well as the action-thriller The Hunted, which he also directed.

Throughout his career, Lawton has demonstrated versatility by working under both his own name and the pseudonym J.D. Athens. Under this alias, he wrote and directed cult B-movies such as Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death and the political satire Pizza Man. His other screenwriting credits span various genres, including the comedy Blankman, the science-fiction thriller Chain Reaction, and the drama Mistress.

In addition to his extensive film work, Lawton transitioned to television in the late 1990s. He created, wrote, and executive produced the syndicated action-comedy series V.I.P., which ran for four seasons. His career is characterized by a distinct ability to balance high-concept action, mainstream romance, and campy satire.
