Elizabeth Hawkins-Whitshed, widely known after her third marriage as Mrs. Aubrey Le Blond and also as Lizzie Le Blond, was a pioneering Irish mountaineer, author, and photographer celebrated for documenting alpine landscapes. Born in 1860, she relocated to Switzerland and began climbing during the 1882–1883 season. At a time when female participation in mountaineering was rare, she achieved prominence for her ascents and her distinctive climbing attire, which often included long skirts.\n\nOver her career, Hawkins-Whitshed conquered more than 100 mountains in total, including 20 first ascents of previously unclimbed peaks. She was also a dedicated chronicler of alpine landscapes, authoring seven books on mountaineering and capturing numerous photographs that made a significant contribution to the documentation of mountain geography.\n\nIn 1907, she played a leading role in founding the Ladies' Alpine Club, serving as its inaugural president. Her legacy endures as a trailblazer who defied gender norms in alpine exploration while making a significant contribution to the documentation of mountain geography through both her writing and her photography.
