Mary Stuart Lewis (1934–2017) was an American musicologist and educator who dedicated much of her career to researching the history of music printing in early modern Europe. As an academic, she shared her expertise with students and peers through her faculty positions at Brown University and the University of Pittsburgh, establishing herself as a respected figure in historical musicology.
Lewis is best known for her monumental three-volume study, Antonio Gardano, Venetian Music Printer, 1538-1569, which she published over nearly two decades from 1988 to 2007. This extensive work offered an in-depth look at the life, business, and cultural impact of one of the Renaissance's most prominent music publishers. Her rigorous research and dedication to the field earned her a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1995, cementing her legacy as a leading authority on Renaissance music printing.
