Charlton Miner Lewis was an American scholar, lawyer, and educator who dedicated his career to the study of English literature. Born in 1866, Lewis initially pursued a career in the legal profession. He attended Yale University, where he studied law, and subsequently spent several years working as a practicing lawyer.

However, Lewis eventually chose to leave the legal field to return to his alma mater, Yale University, as an educator. After returning to Yale, he earned his Ph.D. and began teaching. Over the course of his academic career, Lewis published a variety of books focusing on English versification and literature, establishing himself as a notable authority on poetic structure and literary analysis before his death in 1923.
