Maud McKnight Lindsay was an American educator who made significant contributions to the development of early childhood schooling in the American South. Active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, she dedicated her career to expanding educational access for young children. She is most widely celebrated as the founder of the very first free kindergarten in the state of Alabama, a landmark achievement in the region's educational history.
Beyond her professional achievements in early childhood education, Lindsay maintained notable personal connections, most significantly her friendship with the renowned author and activist Helen Keller. Lindsay's lifelong dedication to teaching and her pioneering role in Alabama's educational system left a lasting legacy. In recognition of her historical contributions and her impact on the state, she was posthumously inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 1995.
