Marie Lion (1855–1922) was a pioneering French-Australian novelist, artist, and educator who made significant contributions to the cultural life of Australia. Born in France, she later relocated to Australia, where she lived for forty years. Throughout her decades in the country, she resided and worked alongside her sister, Berthe Mouchette, who was also an accomplished artist and art teacher. Together, the sisters established themselves within the Australian arts and educational communities. Lion achieved a historic milestone as Australia's first French novelist. Beyond her literary and artistic endeavors, she was a dedicated educator, notably serving as the very first French teacher for the Alliance française in Australia, thereby helping to introduce French language and culture to Australian students.
