John Luther Long was an American lawyer and writer who lived from 1861 to 1927. Throughout his career, Long balanced his professional duties in the legal field with his creative pursuits as an author. He is best remembered for his literary output, which gained significant recognition during his lifetime.\n\nHis most famous work is the short story "Madame Butterfly." The narrative was not drawn from Long's own travels, but was instead based on the personal recollections of his sister, Jennie Correll. Correll had traveled to and lived in Japan with her husband, a Methodist missionary. Her firsthand accounts and observations of Japanese culture and life provided the essential inspiration and background material for Long's celebrated story.
