George Harry Lois (1931–2022) was an American art director, designer, and author who left a significant mark on twentieth-century visual culture. Born in New York City, he became a leading figure in the advertising world, known for his bold, provocative, and minimalist aesthetic that challenged conventional design norms.
Lois is perhaps best known for his prolific collaboration with Esquire magazine, for which he designed over 92 covers between 1962 and 1973. These covers, often featuring striking and controversial imagery, captured the cultural and political zeitgeist of the era. In addition to his design work, Lois authored several books sharing his insights on advertising, creativity, and visual communication.
