Robert Lory is an American author of speculative fiction who established a prolific career writing horror, fantasy, and adventure series during the latter half of the twentieth century. Born on December 29, 1936, Lory pursued his higher education at Harpur College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961. Seeking to refine his craft, he later attended the Famous Writers School in 1964, laying the groundwork for his subsequent literary endeavors.
Lory is best recognized for his contributions to several popular speculative fiction series. Among his most notable creations are the Horrorscope, Shamryke Odell, Return of Dracula, and Trovo series. In addition to publishing under his own name, Lory contributed to the action-adventure genre by writing for the John Eagle Expeditor series of novels. For these contributions, he wrote under the house pseudonym Paul Edwards, a name utilized by Pyramid Books. His work in these series helped define his reputation as a versatile writer capable of blending elements of horror, suspense, and speculative adventure.
Alongside his creative writing, Lory maintained a long-standing career in corporate communications and public relations. Beginning in 1967, he worked as a public relations advisor for the Exxon Corporation. During his tenure with the company, he applied his editorial skills to several corporate publications, serving as the editor for Esso Manhattan, Exxon Manhattan, and the Esso Eastern Review. This dual career allowed him to balance corporate editorial responsibilities with his active output of genre fiction.
