Jane Loudon, also known as Jane C. Loudon or Mrs. Loudon, was an English writer who became an early pioneer of science fiction. Writing long before the term itself was coined, her early work was historically classified for a century within the genres of Gothic fiction, fantasy, or horror. Through her diverse publications, she made significant contributions to both speculative fiction and domestic instruction.\n\nLoudon is highly celebrated for her Gothic novel, The Mummy! A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century, which was published in 1827. In addition to her fiction, she became a pioneering figure in horticulture by creating the first popular gardening manuals. Unlike the specialist horticultural works of her era, Loudon's manuals reframed the art of gardening as an accessible and appropriate activity for young women.\n\nShe was married to the well-known horticulturalist John Claudius Loudon. Together, the couple collaborated on several books, and she also authored her own highly successful series of gardening publications, establishing a lasting legacy in both literature and popular science.
