Elias Avery Lowe (1879–1969), who published under the name E. A. Lowe, was a distinguished Russian-American palaeographer. Born Elias Avery Loew, he dedicated his professional life to the study of ancient manuscripts and handwriting, establishing himself as a leading academic authority in his field during the twentieth century. Lowe's academic career was marked by prestigious appointments at major institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. He served as a lecturer and subsequently a reader at the University of Oxford from 1913 to 1936. Following his tenure in England, he joined the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University in 1936, where he held a professorship and continued his scholarly endeavors.
