Maarten Maartens was the pen name of Jozua Marius Willem van der Poorten Schwartz, a Dutch author born in Amsterdam on August 15, 1858. Uniquely for a writer of his background, Maartens composed his literary works in the English language rather than his native Dutch. This distinctive choice allowed him to connect directly with English-speaking audiences across the globe.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Maartens achieved widespread fame and recognition. His writings were highly regarded and well known in both the United Kingdom and the United States, making him a prominent international literary figure of his day.

Despite his contemporary success, Maartens's legacy did not endure long past his lifetime. After passing away in Doorn on August 3, 1915, his work quickly faded from the public consciousness, and he was soon forgotten by subsequent generations of readers.
