Clarence C. "Clancy" Gordon was an American botanist and prominent environmental activist who became a key figure in Montana's ecological movement during the mid-to-late twentieth century. Born in Seattle, Washington, in 1928, Gordon pursued his higher education in his home state, earning a Bachelor of Science from the University of Washington in 1956 and a Ph.D. from Washington State University in 1960. Following his academic training, he joined the faculty at the University of Montana, serving as a professor in the Department of Botany.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Gordon established himself as an outspoken and highly influential, though occasionally controversial, voice for environmental preservation. His academic background in botany informed his advocacy, allowing him to bridge the gap between scientific research and public environmental activism. Gordon's efforts to protect Montana's natural landscapes and address ecological concerns defined his career until his untimely death from cancer in 1981 at the age of fifty-three.
