Established in 1872, the Arnold Arboretum is the oldest public arboretum in North America. Located in the Jamaica Plain and Roslindale neighborhoods of Boston, the institution functions as both a free public park and a major botanical research center affiliated with Harvard University. The historic landscape was designed by Charles Sprague Sargent and Frederick Law Olmsted, and it serves as the second largest link in Boston's Emerald Necklace.
The Arboretum's collection focuses on temperate trees, shrubs, and vines, with a particular emphasis on plants native to eastern North America and eastern Asia. To continuously develop this collection, Arboretum staff and colleagues embark on plant collecting expeditions to source new material. Scientific research is actively supported throughout the outdoor landscape and within the Weld Hill Research Building.
