Magdeleine Paz, born Magdeleine Legendre and later known as Magdeleine Marx, was a prominent French writer, journalist, translator, and social activist. Active during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, she emerged as one of the leading left-wing intellectuals of the interwar period. Throughout her career, Paz engaged deeply with the political and cultural movements of her era, producing a number of books and translating several others to bridge international literary and political ideas.\n\nHer political journey was marked by active participation in left-wing organizations, including a period of membership in the French Communist Party. However, her alignment with dissident communist views, specifically her support for Leon Trotsky, eventually led to her expulsion from the party. Despite this, Paz remained a committed and influential activist. She played a pivotal role as the primary driving force in the international campaign to secure the release of Victor Serge from prison in Russia, successfully advocating for him to be allowed to return to the West. She remained a dedicated figure in French intellectual life until her death in 1973.
