Born in August 1849, she established a literary career that spanned several decades, contributing to the vibrant novelistic tradition of her era.

In 1877, Mathews married Dr. Henry Albert Reeves, a union that led to her also being known as Mrs. Reeves. Despite her married name, she maintained her prominent professional identity as Helen Mathers until her death in March 1920.
