George Washington Matsell (1811–1877) was an American public official who served as the first Police Commissioner of New York City. Born in New York City, Matsell's career was defined by his pioneering leadership in urban law enforcement during the nineteenth century.

As the inaugural commissioner, Matsell was a central figure in the early history and development of the municipal police force. He lived and worked in New York throughout his life, passing away in Manhattan in 1877.
