Aylmer Maude was an English translator, author, and biographer who, alongside his wife Louise Maude, became widely celebrated for translating the works of Leo Tolstoy into the English language. Born in 1858, Maude spent many years living in Russia, where he developed a deep understanding of Russian culture and established a close personal friendship with Tolstoy. This relationship profoundly shaped his life's work.
Upon returning to England, the Maudes dedicated the remainder of their lives to translating Tolstoy's extensive writings and promoting public interest in his literary and philosophical output. Their collaborative translations became highly regarded for their accessibility and faithfulness to the original texts. In addition to these translations, Aylmer authored the biography The Life of Tolstoy, drawing on his personal association with the author.
