Rebecca Sophia Clarke, writing under the pen name Sophie May, was an American author of children's fiction during the nineteenth century. Born in Norridgewock, Maine, on February 22, 1833, she spent the majority of her life in her native town. Clarke began her publishing career in 1860 and continued to write for over forty years, producing a total of 45 books before her final publication in 1903.
Clarke's stories were notable for their realistic depictions of children, a style she developed by using her own nieces and nephews as inspiration. Her most popular and enduring works were part of the Little Prudy series. Clarke passed away on August 10, 1906, leaving a legacy as a dedicated creator of realistic children's literature.
