Justin Huntly McCarthy (1859–1936) was an Irish writer, historian, and nationalist politician who made contributions to both the literary and political landscapes of his era. Born in 1859, he developed a career that successfully combined creative and historical writing with active public service, reflecting the politically charged environment of late nineteenth-century Ireland.
As a politician, McCarthy served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. His tenure in parliament spanned from 1884 to 1892, during which he aligned himself with Irish nationalist causes. This period of legislative service allowed him to participate directly in the political debates and movements of the late Victorian era.
McCarthy was the son of Justin McCarthy (1830–1912), another notable intellectual and political figure. Because both the father and the son shared the same first name, worked as historians, published various writings, and served as Members of Parliament, they are frequently confused with one another in historical lists, library catalogs, and biographical compilations. The younger McCarthy continued his work until his death on March 20, 1936.
