Edwin Lewis Heller (1918–2004) was a highly decorated United States Air Force officer and flying ace who served during the mid-twentieth century. Attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel, Heller became known for his significant contributions to American military aviation during two of the era's major global conflicts, World War II and the Korean War.
During his service in World War II, Heller demonstrated exceptional skill in aerial combat. He was officially credited with destroying 5.5 enemy aircraft in the air, alongside an additional 14 enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground during various tactical missions. These achievements established his reputation as a formidable pilot within the United States military.
Heller's combat career continued into the Korean War, where he once again engaged in aerial operations. In this conflict, he was credited with destroying 3.5 enemy aircraft. However, his active service in Korea was cut short when his plane was shot down over enemy territory. Following the crash, Heller was captured and held as a prisoner of war. His military legacy is defined by his resilience, his status as a flying ace, and his extensive service across multiple theaters of war.
