Walter Michael Miller Jr. was an American science fiction writer whose literary legacy is defined by his landmark contribution to the genre. Over his career, Miller wrote a series of short stories that he eventually assembled into a celebrated fix-up novel, A Canticle for Leibowitz, which was published in 1959.

The book, which was the only novel Miller published during his lifetime, achieved widespread critical acclaim. In 1961, it was honored with the Hugo Award for Best Novel, cementing Miller's reputation as a significant voice in American science fiction.
