Clara Wood Mingins (September 29, 1859 – November 5, 1917) was an American educator who played a pioneering role in the development of early childhood education in the United States. Active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Mingins dedicated her career to establishing structured learning environments for young children, a concept that was still gaining traction in the American school system at the time.
Her landmark achievement came in 1884, when she opened the first kindergarten in the state of Connecticut, marking a significant milestone for the region's educational landscape. Following her work in Connecticut, Mingins transitioned to Michigan, where she took on a prominent administrative role. She served as the head of the kindergarten programs in Detroit, directing early childhood instruction and expanding the reach of these programs in the city.
