John Ames Mitchell was an American publisher, architect, artist, and novelist active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in 1845, Mitchell developed a multi-faceted career that spanned both the visual arts and the literary world, leaving a distinct mark on American publishing history.
He is most widely recognized as the co-founder, editor, and publisher of the original Life magazine. In addition to managing the publication, Mitchell was a key creative force behind it, serving as a contributing artist. Beyond his work in periodical publishing and illustration, Mitchell also worked as an architect and authored several novels before his death in 1918.
