Mary Russell Mitford was an English essayist, novelist, poet, and dramatist who achieved significant literary success during the early nineteenth century. Born in New Alresford, Hampshire, in 1787, she spent much of her life in Berkshire, particularly in the hamlet of Three Mile Cross near Reading.
