Mary Louisa Molesworth, born Mary Louisa Stewart on May 29, 1839, was an English writer who established a lasting reputation as an author of children's stories. Writing primarily under the name Mrs. Molesworth, she became a prominent figure in late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century literature, capturing the hearts of young readers with her tales.

Before achieving widespread recognition for her children's books, Molesworth began her literary career writing novels intended for adult audiences. Her initial adult novels, which spanned from Lover and Husband in 1869 to Cicely in 1874, were published under the pseudonym Ennis Graham. This pen name allowed her to establish her early footing in the Victorian publishing world.

Throughout her career, her work was published under various iterations of her name, occasionally appearing in print as M. L. S. Molesworth. However, it was her identity as Mrs. Molesworth that became synonymous with her beloved children's fiction. She continued her writing career until her death on January 20, 1921, leaving behind a distinct contribution to English literature.
