Harold Gregory "Hal" Moore Jr. was a highly decorated United States Army officer and author whose military career spanned several decades, most notably during the Vietnam War. A 1945 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Moore rose through the ranks to become a lieutenant general. He was the first member of his graduating class to achieve the ranks of brigadier general, major general, and lieutenant general, earning numerous accolades for his leadership and valor, including the Distinguished Service Cross.\n\nMoore is perhaps best known for his command of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment during the Battle of Ia Drang in November 1965. This intense, early conflict of the Vietnam War became the foundation for his literary legacy. In 1992, Moore co-authored the critically acclaimed bestseller We Were Soldiers Once…and Young alongside journalist Joseph L. Galloway. The book provided a detailed, firsthand account of the battle, emphasizing the experiences and sacrifices of the soldiers on both sides.\n\nThe success of the book cemented Moore's reputation as a military historian and memoirist. In 2002, the memoir was adapted into the major motion picture We Were Soldiers, further popularizing his account of the battle. Throughout his later years, Moore remained an active figure in military education and veteran affairs, receiving honors such as the Order of Saint Maurice and the West Point Distinguished Graduate Award before his death in 2017.
