James Edward Preston Muddock was a prolific British journalist and author of mystery and horror fiction who wrote under his own name as well as the pseudonyms Joyce Emmerson Preston Muddock and Dick Donovan. Born in 1843, Muddock established himself as a key figure in the late Victorian and Edwardian literary scenes, contributing extensively to the popular fiction market of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Muddock's career as a fiction writer was defined by an extraordinary output. Between 1889 and 1922, he published nearly 300 detective and mystery stories. During this period, his detective fiction achieved immense commercial success, with his popularity among readers temporarily rivaling that of his contemporary, Arthur Conan Doyle. Through his numerous stories and journalistic endeavors, Muddock left a lasting mark on the early history of the British detective genre.
