Born Christiana Benedicta Hebenstreit in 1756, Benedikte Naubert was a trailblazing German writer who became a key pioneer of the historical novel genre. Operating during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, she was an incredibly prolific author who published more than fifty historical novels. To maintain her privacy, Naubert chose to release her extensive body of work anonymously or under various pseudonyms, including "Verfasser des Walther von Montbarry," "Verfasser der Alme," and "Fontanges."

Naubert's literary career flourished during the 1780s, a period when the historical novel was still in its developmental stages. Her works, such as Walther von Montbarry and Alme, helped establish the conventions of historical fiction, blending factual history with imaginative romance. Despite her immense productivity and her foundational role in shaping the genre, Naubert's identity was largely shielded from her contemporary audience, and she passed away in 1819. Today, she remains a largely forgotten figure in literary history, unrecognized by the general public even within Germany.
