Vasily Ivanovich Nemirovich-Danchenko was a highly prolific Russian writer, essayist, journalist, and memoirist whose active career spanned the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in 1845, he was the brother of the theatre director Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. Over the course of his long life, Vasily established himself as perhaps the most industrious author of the late Russian Empire, ultimately publishing more than 250 books.\n\nThroughout his career, Nemirovich-Danchenko's extensive writings found a massive audience. He achieved widespread popularity among the general reading public, who eagerly consumed his numerous publications. However, this popular success did not translate to critical acclaim, as he received very little recognition or success from mainstream literary critics of his day.\n\nIn his later years, Nemirovich-Danchenko lived in emigration, eventually passing away in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1936. Despite the critical neglect during his lifetime, his sheer volume of work and immense popularity among ordinary readers make him a significant figure in the history of late imperial Russian literature.
