Nicolaus of Damascus was a prolific Greek historian, philosopher, and diplomat who flourished during the Augustan age of the Roman Empire. Born in Damascus around 64 BC, he became a highly influential intellectual figure of his era, navigating the complex political landscape of the early Roman Empire. He served as a close advisor and diplomat, notably maintaining relationships with both Herod the Great and the Roman Emperor Augustus.\n\nThough the vast majority of his extensive literary output has been lost to time, Nicolaus is celebrated for his ambitious historical projects. His primary achievement was a monumental universal history spanning 144 books, which documented world history up to his own time. In addition to this massive undertaking, he authored a detailed biography of Emperor Augustus and a personal autobiography, significant portions of which have survived. His diverse portfolio also included a biography of Herod, various philosophical treatises, and dramatic works in the form of tragedies and comedies.
