His most notable political campaign occurred in 1944, when he secured the Democratic nomination for Governor of Nebraska after winning a closely contested primary election. However, Olsen's bid for office ended in defeat during the general election, where he lost to the incumbent Republican governor, Dwight Griswold. Olsen passed away in June 1954.
