Eliza Orzeszkowa was an influential Polish novelist who became a leading figure of the Positivism movement in Poland. Active during the period of the foreign Partitions of Poland, her literary contributions played a significant role in the cultural and intellectual life of her nation during a time of political division and foreign rule.\n\nOrzeszkowa's literary significance was recognized internationally when, in 1905, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature alongside fellow Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz.
