Rodrigues Ottolengui was an American writer and dentist of Sephardic heritage whose life and career spanned the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, in the spring of 1861, he spent his formative early years in the American South before relocating to the North. In 1877, he made the pivotal move to New York City, an energetic urban center where he would establish his professional roots and reside for the vast majority of his adult life.
Throughout his active years, Ottolengui maintained a unique dual identity, balancing his clinical contributions to the dental profession with his creative endeavors as an author. His background as a writer of Sephardic descent added a distinct cultural dimension to the American literary and professional landscape of his era.
