William Harold Owen (1897–1971) was an English biographer best known as the younger brother and chronicler of the celebrated soldier and poet Wilfred Owen. Born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, at the home of his paternal grandparents, Owen spent his early childhood moving with his family to Birkenhead after his father secured a post as a station master. He would eventually dedicate a significant portion of his life to managing and protecting the literary and personal legacy of his older brother.
Owen's primary literary contribution is Journey from Obscurity, a three-volume biography of Wilfred Owen published between 1963 and 1965. For many years, this extensive work was widely assumed by the public and researchers to be an accurate, objective, and definitive record of the poet's life and family background. However, modern literary analysis has since come to view the biography as a somewhat romanticized version of events.
Beyond his biographical writing, Owen actively sought to control how his brother was perceived by the public. Concerned that readers might discover Wilfred's homosexuality, Owen heavily censored many of his brother's surviving letters and diaries. Despite these protective and controversial interventions, Owen's publications and efforts remain central to the study of Wilfred Owen's life and enduring literary impact.
