Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall was an English novelist, journalist, and Islamic scholar. Born in 1875, Pickthall established himself as a respected novelist in the early twentieth century, earning praise from prominent literary contemporaries such as D. H. Lawrence, H. G. Wells, and E. M. Forster.\n\nA pivotal moment in Pickthall's life occurred on November 29, 1917, when he publicly declared his conversion from Christianity to Islam following a lecture on 'Islam and Progress' delivered to the Muslim Literary Society in Notting Hill, London. Following his conversion, he dedicated much of his intellectual life to Islamic scholarship and representing Muslim perspectives to the English-speaking world.\n\nPickthall's most enduring legacy is his 1930 translation of the Quran, titled The Meaning of the Glorious Koran. It remains one of the most widely read and influential English translations of the holy text, celebrated for its literary quality and scholarly fidelity. He passed away in 1936, leaving behind a unique legacy as both a British man of letters and a pioneering Western Islamic intellectual.
