Howard Patterson

Howard Fenno Patterson (1927–2000) was an American competitive swimmer who represented the United States at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, Patterson faced significant childhood adversity, contracting polio around the age of ten and losing both of his parents during his teenage years. Biographers suggest he turned to swimming as a means of escaping these early hardships, finding solace and purpose in the water.\n\nPatterson's athletic career began to flourish at Saginaw's Arthur Hill High School, where he competed from 1943 to 1945. During this period, he earned All-American honors three times, set a state record in the 100-yard backstroke, and contributed to state championship-winning freestyle relay teams that established a new national record. Facing the draft after high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during the World War II era and eventually achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant.\n\nFollowing his military service, Patterson swam for Michigan State University and earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic team, competing in the backstroke event in London. In his later civilian life, he transitioned away from competitive sports and worked for the Michigan State Liquor Control Commission.
