Merrill Anthony McPeak is a retired four-star general of the United States Air Force. Born on January 9, 1936, McPeak dedicated his career to military service, ultimately reaching some of the highest leadership positions within the American military establishment. His active service culminated in his appointment as the 14th Chief of Staff of the Air Force, a role he held from 1990 to 1994.

During his distinguished tenure, McPeak achieved a unique historical milestone in 1993 when he served as the Acting Secretary of the Air Force. This temporary appointment occurred prior to the official selection of Sheila E. Widnall by President Bill Clinton. With this service, McPeak became the only Chief of Staff of the Air Force and the sole active-duty uniformed Air Force officer to have ever held the position of Acting Secretary.
