Eden Phillpotts was an English author, poet, and dramatist whose long life and career spanned from the Victorian era through the mid-twentieth century. Born in Mount Abu, India, in 1862, Phillpotts relocated to England during his youth. He received his formal education in Plymouth, Devon, a region that would become closely associated with his background and development.

Prior to finding his calling in the literary arts, Phillpotts engaged in more conventional employment, working as an insurance officer for a period of ten years. Driven by an interest in the performing arts, he eventually left his insurance career to study for the stage. This period of theatrical study served as a stepping stone, ultimately leading him to embark on a dedicated career as a writer. Over the course of his lifetime, he established himself as a versatile writer of poetry, drama, and prose, continuing his creative endeavors until his death in 1960.
