Catherine Louisa Pirkis (1839–1910) was a British author of detective fiction and a dedicated animal welfare activist. Active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, she frequently published her literary works under the pen name C. L. Pirkis. This stylistic choice was deliberately employed to prevent readers and critics from making assumptions or associations based on her gender, allowing her writing to be evaluated on its own merits.
