William Pittenger (1840–1904) was an American soldier who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He is historically distinguished as one of the very first recipients of the Medal of Honor, the United States military's highest decoration for valor.
His service during the Civil War remains his primary historical legacy. As an early recipient of the Medal of Honor, Pittenger's military career is closely associated with the recognition of Union soldiers during the conflict.
