Joseph Russell Pitts is a former American politician and member of the Republican Party. Born on October 10, 1939, he served as the U.S. representative for Pennsylvania's 16th congressional district for twenty years, from 1997 to 2017. His district was based in Lancaster and Reading, covering much of the local Amish country as well as the far southwestern suburbs of Philadelphia in Chester County.\n\nIn December 2015, Pitts announced that he would not run for reelection in the 2016 congressional elections, bringing his tenure in the House of Representatives to a close at the end of his term.
