The Bracey Report

Gerald Watkins Bracey (1940–2009) was an influential American education policy researcher, author, and critic. Throughout his career, he established himself as a prominent and often contrarian voice in the debates surrounding public education in the United States. Bracey dedicated much of his professional life to analyzing educational data, challenging mainstream assumptions, and advocating for public schools against what he perceived as unfair political and systemic critiques.

He is best known for establishing the annual "Bracey Report on the Condition of Public Education," a highly regarded series of analyses that he authored for seventeen years. In these reports, Bracey meticulously examined contemporary educational trends, frequently positioning himself in direct opposition to the prevailing educational policies of the era. His writing was characterized by a sharp, data-driven critique of standardized testing and corporate-style school reforms.

Bracey's dedication to his research continued until the very end of his life. At the time of his death in October 2009, his final annual report remained unfinished. To honor his legacy and complete his work, colleagues at the National Education Policy Center undertook the final revisions, publishing the completed report posthumously in November 2009.
