Jennie Augusta Brownscombe was a prominent American painter, designer, etcher, and illustrator active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in 1850, she pursued rigorous artistic training both in the United States and Paris. She played a foundational role in the American art community as a student, teacher, and founding member of the prestigious Art Students League of New York.

Brownscombe achieved significant acclaim for her genre paintings, which frequently depicted scenes from revolutionary and colonial American history. Her most famous work, The First Thanksgiving, remains a seminal visual representation of early American history. Her ability to capture nostalgic and historical narratives resonated deeply with the public, earning her a reputation as one of the country's leading artists.

In addition to her fine art, Brownscombe was a highly successful commercial artist. She sold the reproduction rights to more than one hundred of her paintings, allowing her work to reach a massive audience through prints, calendars, and greeting cards. By 1899, the New York World recognized her as "one of America's best artists," and her works continue to be preserved in numerous public collections and museums today.
