Richard Gerold Purcell Jr., known professionally as Dick Purcell, was an American actor whose career in the mid-twentieth century was highlighted by his portrayal of iconic screen roles. He is most widely recognized for playing the title character in the 1944 film serial Captain America, adapted from the Marvel Comics character. In this landmark action role, he co-starred alongside notable actors Lorna Gray and Lionel Atwill. Beyond his famous superhero role, Purcell was a prolific performer who appeared in a variety of films during the late 1930s and early 1940s. His filmography spans several genres, including dramas, comedies, and mystery films. Among his notable appearances during this period are roles in Tough Kid (1938), Accidents Will Happen (1938), Heroes in Blue (1939), and Irish Luck (1939).
