Edward Kennard Rand (1871–1945), often known as EKR, was a distinguished American classicist and medievalist whose academic career spanned over four decades. He served as the Pope Professor of Latin at Harvard University from 1901 until his retirement in 1942. Throughout his career, Rand also held prestigious visiting positions, including serving two terms as the Sather Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and concluding his academic life as a senior fellow at Dumbarton Oaks.

Rand made significant contributions to the institutionalization of medieval studies in the United States. He was a key founder of the Mediaeval Academy of America and established its highly regarded journal, Speculum. His leadership extended to several prominent academic organizations; he served as the president of both the American Philological Association (now the Society for Classical Studies) and the Classical Association of New England.

As an author and scholar, Rand is best remembered for his seminal 1928 book, Founders of the Middle Ages, which explored the intellectual transition from classical antiquity to the medieval era. His scholarship bridged classical philology and medieval history, leaving a lasting legacy on how the transition between these historical periods is studied.
